We’re extremely excited about Artists Edition No. 2, which will feature original pieces by Cheeming Boey, Michael Hsiung and Nishat Akhtar! Drop us a line (info@bookcityjackets.com) and we’ll let you know as soon as they’re available.
A lot of people ask whether my entire bookshelf is filled with covered books. It’s not, but I do use covered books as accents. Here’s a picture of my bookshelf (looking its cleanest/best) and you can see that I have a block of books covered by “Bookshelf” and a couple of Artists Edition No. 1 covers covering otherwise boring books. I think that an entire shelf of covered books would be a bit overwhelming.

Rabeika Messina has written an article for La Casa, a Dominican shelter magazine, all about books and bookshelves and . . . Book City Jackets! Thanks, Rabeika!

The Concept of Law by H.L.A. Hart. My favorite phrase so far: “orders backed by threats”.

Artists Edition No. 1 contributor Morgan Blair has been roadtripping across the country in order to get to San Diego where she’ll be creating “works and installation” known, collectively, as Brain Glamor and subtitled “Morgan goes Pacific”.
Sounds like a good time!

PS: We’ll be at the Brooklyn Flea in Ft. Greene on Saturday.
Grace over at Design*Sponge had very nice things to say about Book City Jackets and we’ve been getting really great feedback on Artists Edition No. 1. Also, Eveline and her people have posted about the set — Thanks guys! (We’ll have a run-down on blog coverage of AE1 up soon.)
We’re already hard at work on Artists Edition No. 2 — Please send us samples of your work if you’re interested in participating!
And, “Hello!” to everyone we met at the Brooklyn Flea in DUMBO this weekend. We had a great time, it didn’t rain and we got to talk book covers all day long. It was a good day.
We’ll probably be in Ft. Greene on Saturday. (Follow us on twitter and know for sure!)

We are really excited to announce the release of Artists Edition No. 1, featuring original drawings by Eveline Tarunadjaja, Morgan Blair and Matthew Caputo. Our goal with the Artists Edition series is to turn books into portable pieces of art that can be “displayed” on bookshelves and coffee tables, in cafes and classrooms, on planes and trains . . . anywhere people bring their books. Eveline, Morgan and Matt understand the artistic opportunities that book covers represent (for them and for readers) and their striking pieces take full advantage of this underutilized space. Information about each artist is below the images. (By the way, we are currently accepting submissions for the next set in the Artists Edition series, which will be released in the early fall.)
Click for larger versions.
Eveline Tarunadjaja was born and raised in Indonesia among the high rise shopping malls and spicy food. She moved to Melbourne, Australia almost 10 years ago and found her home in good coffee shops around the city to draw sugary and mischievous imagery inspired by her love for stories, Asian family, 60’s japanese girl group and giraffes with the amount of hairy details that would break her neck someday.
Matthew Caputo is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. He spends most of his time drawing and painting and trying to think of things that will make him and others laugh.
Morgan Blair is a freelance illustrator, fine artist, and sometimes-desperado. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) living and working in Brooklyn, New York where she advances her interest in trees, legos and excellent music. Her ambitions for the present and future include adventure, survival, being in the
presence of magma and making art forever.
Nicholson Baker has a cute (and kind of unkind) review of Amazon’s Kindle in the New Yorker this week, which included the following about who’s buying them.
[R]omance readers are major Kindlers. “The success of the ebook is being fueled by the romance and erotic romance market,” Peter Smith, of ITworld, reports. Smith cites the actress and Kindle enthusiast Felicia Day, of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” who has been bingeing on paranormals like “Dark Needs at Night’s Edge.” “I’ve read like, 6 books this week and ordered about 10 more,” Day blogged. “It’s stuff I never would have checked out at the Barnes and Noble, because the gleaming and oily man chests would have made me blush too much.”
Hey Amazon — That’s our market!

Book City Jackets made its debut at the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, Brooklyn this weekend. We had a great time and met some great people. Here’s a slideshow that includes, among other things, the picture below of me working the booth. Many thanks to the Brooklyner crew for a very well-run event and for the opportunity to win some hearts and minds.

Artists Edition No. 1 went to the printer this week — They look great and will be available in the next week or so.
We’ll be announcing the names of our first three artists over the next few days but, in the meantime, here’s a hint to kick-off your guesses: one’s from Bushwick, one’s from New Jersey and one’s from Australia. Please contact us if you want to be in the loop.
Also, we’ve upgraded our online store — Please contact us if you have any problems.

I love the Jeff Scher film that was featured in The Animated Life section of yesterday’s New York Times. (I can’t embed it — just follow the link . . . .) It captures the experience of walking New York’s streets and trying to look without looking in order to “read” other people. Plus, the related commentary about slyly checking people out kind of reminds me of Book City Jackets which are, among other things, sly acknowledgments of sly glances.
